Wheaton Police Records

Police records in Wheaton are held by the Wheaton Police Department for city incidents and by the DuPage County Sheriff's Office for matters outside city limits. Wheaton is the county seat of DuPage County, which means the main courthouse, the circuit clerk, and the sheriff are all based right here. That gives Wheaton residents direct access to multiple record sources without traveling far. This page covers how to get police records in Wheaton, the DuPage County court system, and state-level tools for background checks.

Wheaton Police Department Records

The Wheaton Police Department keeps all police records for incidents inside the city. Their station is at 900 West Liberty Drive, Wheaton, IL 60187. Contact the records division for copies of incident reports, arrest files, and accident reports written by Wheaton officers.

You request records through FOIA. The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140/) requires all public bodies to respond to written records requests within five business days. The Wheaton PD follows this timeline. Write your request and include the date, location, names, and case number if available. Email or mail it to the FOIA officer. You can also bring it to the station in person.

Copies are free for the first 50 pages. After that, you pay $0.15 per page. Check or money order only. If the department denies your request, the denial must cite a specific exemption under FOIA. You have the right to appeal to the Illinois Attorney General's Public Access Counselor. The appeal costs nothing and the counselor reviews the denial independently.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office is at 501 North County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. Their phone number is (630) 407-2000. You can email them at sheriff@dupagesheriff.org. The sheriff handles all police records for unincorporated DuPage County. If an incident near Wheaton happened outside city limits, the sheriff probably has the report.

FOIA requests to the sheriff follow the same state rules. Five business days to respond. First 50 pages free. $0.15 per page after that. The sheriff's office also runs the DuPage County Jail. Booking records and jail intake data can be requested through FOIA as well.

Since Wheaton is the county seat, the sheriff's office is right in town. You can hand deliver a FOIA request to their office on County Farm Road. This is faster than mail and gives you a chance to confirm your request was received. The records staff can sometimes tell you on the spot whether they have what you are looking for.

DuPage County Circuit Clerk

The DuPage County Circuit Clerk is at 505 North County Farm Road, Wheaton, IL 60187. Their phone number is (630) 407-8700. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The clerk handles all court records for the 18th Judicial Circuit, which covers all of DuPage County.

An important detail about DuPage County: criminal court records are not available online. You must go in person to search them. This is different from some other Illinois counties that offer online case searches. The clerk's office in Wheaton is the main location, but the 18th Judicial Circuit also has field courts in Addison at 3 Friendship Plaza (2nd Floor) and in Downers Grove at 4000 Saratoga Avenue. These field courts handle some cases locally.

If a Wheaton arrest led to criminal charges, the court file is with the circuit clerk. You may need the police report from the Wheaton PD plus the court file from the clerk for a full picture. These two agencies do not share records systems. Each has its own FOIA process. Under the Criminal Identification Act (20 ILCS 2630/), sealed and expunged records will not be released by either agency.

Criminal Background Checks

The Wheaton Police Department does not run criminal background checks. Illinois routes all of those through the state. Contact the Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification at 260 North Chicago Street, Joliet, IL 60432. Call (815) 740-5160.

Under the Uniform Conviction Information Act (20 ILCS 2635/), only conviction records are public. Arrests that did not lead to a conviction stay private. Use the CHIRP portal for name-based conviction searches. Register, submit a name and date of birth, and the system returns results from all Illinois counties.

For more thorough results, go with a fingerprint-based check through a Live Scan vendor. The BOI maintains a list of approved vendors. Some are in the DuPage County area. If you want your own record, the ISP offers a free Access and Review so you can see and dispute anything in your file.

ISP Troop 3 covers DuPage County. If a state trooper handled an incident on I-88, I-355, or any state road near Wheaton, the Illinois State Police has the report. The Wheaton PD does not have it.

Crash reports from ISP are at isp.illinois.gov/CrashReports. Reports cost $5 each by mail. Send a check to the Patrol Records Unit at 801 South 7th Street, Suite 600-M, Springfield, IL 62703. The ISP FOIA Officer is Sarah Wheeler at ISP.FOIA.Officer@illinois.gov.
