FOIA Process and Record Access in Vermilion County
Getting records in Vermilion County follows the standard Illinois process. Write a request. Send it to the correct office. Wait for a response. The sheriff handles police reports. The circuit clerk handles court records. Each is a separate public body under FOIA.
Be specific in your request. Give the name, date, and location. A report number or case number helps. Avoid asking for "everything related to" a topic. Those broad requests can be denied as unduly burdensome. Tight, focused requests get faster results.
Some records are restricted. Under the Criminal Identification Act (20 ILCS 2630/), arrest records that did not result in a conviction may not be public. Sealed and expunged records are off limits. Juvenile records are generally not available. Active investigation files can be withheld too. Every denial must come in writing with a legal citation.
If you disagree with a denial, you can appeal to the Illinois Attorney General's Public Access Counselor. The process is free and the office reviews whether the agency followed the law.
